Youth Education

The Jefferson County Radio Amateur Club operates a variety of youth oriented programs which are intended to reinforce science, technology, engineering and math skills in youth aged 10 to 21. These programs include integration of amateur radio into existing educational cirriculum, after-school & weekend educational workshops at our facility and public events throughout the tri-county area.

Very few people are aware of the profound impact that ham radio can have on a young person. Although many hams have gone on to take part in ground-breaking research such as one particular ham that invented the cardiac pacemaker very few are as famous as Steve Wozniak the co-founder of Apple Computer. In the 6th grade Steve Wozniak tested for and received his ham radio license. Amateur Radio, together with a father that worked in the electronics field, gave Steve the knowledge necessary to invent the first true personal computer.

Scouting and Amateur Radio:

Scouting and Amateur Radio have a long, rich history of working together. Through the annual Jamboree on The Air or “JOTA” scouts get to sit down at the radio and talk with other scouts around the world and forge relationships that last a lifetime. Scouts who complete the associated requirements can receive Amateur Radio related badges and patches. Many participants who take part in Amateur Radio as scouts go on to work in technology related careers.

2012 Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology:

The American Radio Relay League, operating as the national association for Amateur Radio in the United States, has announced the opening of it’s application period for the Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology. The 4 day workshop is intended for classroom teachers and support staff to introduce ways of integrating the basics of radio, electronics and robotics into the classes and lives of young people. Scholarships are available which cover the cost of transportation, housing, meals and instructional materials for educators chosen to attend.
